George L Smith State Park
George L Smith State Park is nestled just outside of Metter, GA. It’s about 3 hours from Atlanta, GA and an hour from Savannah, GA. We recently went down for the GA Southern game and later spent the evening at the state park. We had an awesome time.
The campsites and cottages are nice and well kept. The hosts and guests are very accommodating to everyone. The southern hospitality of the grounds was nice for a change. We got there with about 2 hours worth of daylight left and had time to get everything situated. The host showed us around and we were able to purchase firewood as well. $5 for 12 logs. Not bad since you don’t have to cut it yourself.
We took the time the next day to walk the grounds and take pictures. There’s plenty of hiking trails, canoeing and paddle boat opportunities. There’s even a little history about the old saw mill on the park site.
If I had never gone to GA Southern I would probably have never stumbled on this state park. My friends and I used to go camping here a few times during college for fun. George L Smith State Park is definitely worth your time and it’s close to the GA Southern campus and Savannah. Whether you’re in the area for an hour or an entire day this park is definitely a hidden gem worth your time.
